A giant 3-tonne sunfish recently discovered off a Portuguese island has set a new world record for the heaviest bony fish ever recorded, a new study has found.

The giant fish, known as the giant sunfish, was discovered on December 9, 2021, while swimming lifelessly off the coast of Faial Island in the Azores, a group of Portuguese islands in the North Atlantic. According to a statement from the Atlantic Naturalist Association, a non-profit conservation and research organization based on Faial Island, local authorities have confiscated the massive body and returned it to the port so it can be properly examined.
Researchers performed an autopsy on a giant sunfish and detailed the results in a new study published Oct. 11 in the Journal of fish biology. The giant fish weighed 6,049 pounds (2,744 kg), or almost 3 tons (2.7 metric tons). According to the statement, the researchers also analyzed the stomach contents of the sunfish and took samples of its DNA.
The dead fish are indeed a “beautiful specimen,” said study lead author Jose Nuno Gomez Pereira, a marine biologist with the Atlantic Society.
According to the statement, the sunfish is named not because of its round body shape, but because it basks in the sun on the surface of the ocean to keep warm after a long dive in the cold dark waters in search of food.
Giant sunfish can be found all over the world, but their exact number is unknown.
