Washington is spending heavily on the development and production of hypersonic weapons similar to Russia’s Kinzhal and Tirkon hypersonic missiles, and aims to have the first missile of this type in service in 2027.
The US hypersonic missile is expected to enter service by 2027, and the Pentagon is studying several projects related to hypersonic weapons, including the Hypersonic Attack cruise missile, which is to develop a hypersonic cruise air missile that will be powered by an air-jet engine capable of accelerate in the upper layers of the earth’s atmosphere up to 6000 kilometers per hour.
It will be carried by fifth-generation F-35 and F-22 fighters.
At the same time, the ARRW air-to-air missile is being developed, which should have a speed of more than Mach 20 (about 24,000 km / h), launch at a range of 900 km and be carried by B-1B strategic bombers.
However, the United States has encountered problems in the production of hypersonic weapons. Last year, the US Air Force conducted 3 tests of a prototype of the advanced missile’s accelerator unit. All were failures.
The rocket failed to separate from the aircraft on its first test in April 2021, the rocket engine failed to fire in July, and the ARRW launch failed again in December.
