The boss is a professional Elon Musk with many…unique ideas. One of them is that he decided to stop paying rent on Twitter’s office to “cut costs.” At least he isn’t afraid to follow through. Musk has been thinking about a Tesla that works with Valve for almost a year. With a holiday update released on December 13, the electric car company has added Steam to its cars’ software.
Tesla has been trying for years to make its cars look like very fragile and expensive video game consoles. Musk said in 2018 that his company would put Atari games in their vehicles, which you could play while they were stopped. In 2019, you could play Cuphead. In 2020, you could play Fallout Shelter. In 2021, Musk said that the Tesla Model S and X were PS5 with wheels.
At least, that’s what they say. Some owners can no longer play old games in the beautiful setting of a Walmart parking lot because of recent model updates, and the PS5 thing has yet to come to anything. This Steam integration is the closest Tesla owners will get to playing Cyberpunk 2077, which Musk has been promising for over a year. However, it will only work on Model S and X cars built in 2022 “with 16GB DDR memory, and requires Premium Connectivity,” according to the release notes.
For cars that meet the requirements, owners can access Steam from the Tesla Arcade, link their account to their car, and even play Cyberpunk, as the confidently titled teaser video “Your Tesla is Now a Gaming Rig” suggests.
“This would be great if I ever decided to live in my car full-time!” says one enthusiastic YouTube commenter. Since Musk, who is one of the world’s richest people, isn’t willing to pay his rent, so he should think about this.
