The Israel Antiquities Authority has announced plans to begin excavations at the site of the 2,700-year-old Pool of Siloam, where, according to legend, Jesus Christ healed a blind man.
The Siloam Pool is located within the City of David Archaeological Park. Experts estimate that it was part of the Jerusalem water supply network during the reign of King Hezekiah. Some researchers suggest that it was used in cleansing rituals in Christianity.
“The Pool of Siloam is a historic site of national and international importance,” said Moshe Lev, mayor of Jerusalem.
He notes that after a long wait, this important site will be open, making it accessible to the millions of tourists who come to Jerusalem every year.
According to the Jerusalem Post, tourists will be able to watch the excavations, and after they are completed, the Siloam pool will be added to the pilgrimage route, which starts from the city of David and ends at the Al-Buraq wall.
