‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Passes $538 Million Domestically

With another stronghold from one weekend to the next, Avatar: The Way of Water is still bringing in people over the holidays and is looking to spend its fifth weekend at the top of the box office in the United States. After making $7 million on its fifth Friday, the epic science-fiction sequel has made $538 million in the United States. Still, it’s doing better than the first Avatar, which had made about $500 million by the same time, but not as well.

The movie will make more than $550 million in the U.S. by Sunday, and $566 million is expected by the end of the four-day MLK weekend. The Way of Water is expected to bring in about $29 million over a regular three-day weekend and $36 million over a four-day holiday weekend, which is only a 36% drop from the previous weekend. The film has already made more than $1.7 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2022.

Domestically, it’s still behind Top Gun: Maverick, which made $718 million, but it will pass The Lion King remake’s lifetime total of $543 million by Sunday, putting it at number 13 on the all-time list. The movie gave The Dark Knight ($535 million) to move to the 14th spot on the all-time domestic box office list.

Older people are supporting Sony’s movie A Man Called Otto, based on the best-selling Swedish novel of the same name which stars Tom Hanks in the lead role. Hanks was recently part of another hit movie for older people, the musical drama Elvis. The movie made $4 million on its first Friday in wide release. It is expected to make $14 million over the long weekend, bringing its total in the U.S. to over $20 million. Amazingly, A Man Called Otto will have done better by Monday than Damien Chazelle’s star-studded Babylon.

With Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Universal will also take the number four spot. The sequel came out more than a decade after the first Puss in Boots, a spinoff of the hit Shrek franchise. On its fourth Friday, it made an extra $3 million and is on track to make $16 million in its first four days. But the most important thing is that the movie will make more than $100 million in the U.S. Sometime in the next few days. The plane, the latest action movie with Gerard Butler, rounded out the top five. M3GAN is the only other movie that can compete with Plane as a meme. With $3.5 million on Friday, the movie could make between $10.5 million and $11.7 million in the next four days. The plane looks like another great win for Butler. It is said to have cost around $20 million to make.
