The supervisory board of Meta Corporation (which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) on Monday reversed the company’s decision to scrap any post on the Facebook platform that included the slogan “Death to Khamenei”, stating that it did not violate the rule against violent threats.
The board, which is funded by the company but operates in independently, said in its decision that the phrase is often used to mean “down with Khamenei” in reference to Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who has led a violent crackdown on protests that have been taking place in his country for months.
The board urged the company to develop better ways to filter messages in tale context in line with its content policies and to clearly outline the circumstances in verbal threats to state leaders are permitted.
Iran has witnessed protests since mid-September, in following the death of the young woman, Mahsa Amini (22), after the morality police arrested her for wearing “inappropriate clothes”.
The protests, in which protesters from all walks of life took part to call for the fall of the ruling theocracy, represented one of the greatest challenges the Islamic Republic’s government has faced since the 1979 revolution.
The riots presented a dilemma that has become a recurring dilemma for Mita, who has repeatedly wavered in his approach to the scathing political statements posted on his platforms.
The company bans any method that incites “serious violence,” but aims to avoid going too far by limiting enforcement to credible threats, leading to uncertainty about when and how the rule is enforced.
After the Russian military operation in Ukraine last year, for example, Meta adopted a temporary death call exemption for Russian President Vladimir Putin to provide an outlet for users in the region to vent their anger over the war. The company rescinded the waiver days later.
