According to Reports, Google is Working on a Competitor to Apple’s AirTag Tracker

Everyone compares Google Pixel phones to Apple and its iPhones when we talk about smartphone ecosystems, but what about their accessories? Earbuds and smart speakers are among the many products that Apple and Google sell. When Apple unveiled its AirTag trackers in 2021, it scored a pleasant surprise. A new rumor draws on recent data to assert that Google may introduce a competing tracker.

Companies like Tile have been creating wireless trackers for years, so they’re familiar. With its SmartTags, even Samsung joined the fun. But as we’ve seen repeatedly, it took Apple’s involvement for anyone to pay notice.

As Google’s Fast Pair gets ready to offer support for a new “locator tag” product type, Android expert Mishaal Rahman shared his most recent findings earlier today. Evidence suggested that work was being done on a distributed tracking network, maybe branded “Finder Network,” that would operate similarly to Apple’s airbags. Developer and leaker Kuba Wojciechowski then played the trump card, Grogu, with everything else on the table.

Wojciechowski claims that the “grogu,” “groguaudio,” or “GR10” gadget being developed by Google’s Nest division would support both BLE and the extremely tracker-friendly UWB. It comes in various colors and has a tiny inside speaker that buzzes alarms. However, that is all we currently know about the hardware.

We have much to learn about what Google may have in mind for Grogu. Still, the consensus indicates that while its existence may be confirmed at some point in the first half of the year, the Pixel 8 may be its most likely release date rather than anything Google may have in mind for I/O.

Given the privacy disaster that AirTags turned out to be for Apple, it is a good idea for Google to consider some potential outcomes and proactively develop protective mechanisms.
