DigiTimes, a Taiwanese news site, said today that Apple plans to release a new MacBook Air in the second half of 2023. It may have a 3nm chip. This chip would probably be Apple’s next-generation M3 chip. Compared to Apple’s current 5nm chip, it would run faster and use less power.
The supply chain is more focused on the cheaper MacBook Air, which is expected to be updated in the second half of 2023 and could have a 3nm processor, say industry sources quoted in the report. The report doesn’t say anything else about the MacBook Air or give a more specific date for when it will come out.
Late in December, TSMC, an Apple partner that makes chips, started making 3nm chips on a large scale. Along with the A17 Bionic chip in later models of the iPhone 15 Pro.
This week, Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, said that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro will also be updated in 2024 with 3nm M3 Pro and M3 Max chips. This would be a familiar pattern for Apple since the M1 and M2 chips were first used in the MacBook Air, and then the Pro and Max versions of those chips were used in the MacBook Pro.
There are a few things to keep in mind about this report. First, these are the same DigiTimes writers who said that the just-announced 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips would be “delayed” past early 2023, which was not true. Second, Ross Young, an expert in the display business, said last month that a 15-inch MacBook Air would come out in the first half of 2023. If what we heard today is true, 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with 3nm chips might come out in the second half of 2023 instead.
The new MacBook Air with the M2 chip came out in July. It has a brand-new design with a notch in the screen, MagSafe charging, a 1080p camera, and other features. Apple still sells a MacBook Air with the M1 chip as well.
