Construction workers have discovered a life-size ancient Roman marble statue of Hercules while repairing a sewer system under a park in Rome.
The statue, which appears to be from the Roman Empire period (27 BC – 476 AD), was discovered while crews were digging up the ground to fix a sewer pipe that had collapsed under a garden in Rome, causing landslides and cracks in the ground. .
And the Appia Antica Park announced on Facebook that the area “had a big surprise for us: a life-size marble statue that, thanks to the presence of a thick staff and a lion’s mantle covering the head, we can definitely identify. he represents Hercules.”
The excavations reached a depth of 20 meters, and, as is often the case in Rome, the excavations took place in the presence of archaeologists.
Archaeologists say that the statue was not discovered in the place where the ancient Romans probably exhibited it. Instead, they believe that he was buried there during the construction of sewers in the first half of the 20th century.
It is noteworthy that the statue was found along the “Via Appia”, an ancient road stretching from Rome to the southeastern region of Italy. The road was of great and strategic importance in the conquest of southern Italy by Rome, as military supplies were transported along it.
Hercules is known as the Roman equivalent of the Greek hero god Hercules, son of the god Jupiter, and his mother was a human woman named Alcmene, who in turn was the granddaughter of the hero Perseus (the Greek hero who cut off Perseus’ head).
