The Sonos Roam’s flashy features wouldn’t matter if it didn’t sound great. However, we’re happy to say that despite its small size, the Roam has a powerful sound with surprisingly robust bass, even if it doesn’t have the rhythmic accuracy you’d expect from an audiophile speaker.
The Sonos Roam has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity so that it can be used as a portable speaker or as part of a larger multi-room Sonos system. When connected to Wi-Fi, it also works as a smart speaker with Google Assistant and Alexa.
Compared to other Bluetooth speakers we’ve tested that cost about the same, this one has many features for the price. The Sonos Roam has a sleek design that won’t look out of place in your home. It’s also tough, waterproof, and dustproof, so you can use it to listen to music outside. The battery life is a little short, though. It’s enough for a good day out, but if that’s important to you, you should look at the B & O A1 instead.
Sonos is now offering the Sonos Roam SL as well. The only difference between this new Roam and the old one is that it doesn’t have a microphone. If privacy is important to you and you want to save around $20, £20, or AU$30, the Roam SL could be just what you need.
Tribit Stormbox Micro 2
The Tribit Storm box Micro 2 is the smallest Bluetooth speaker we’ve tried that sounds the best and has the most features. It’s not the most powerful or loudest Bluetooth speaker on the market, but it’s the best you can get for this size and price.
The Micro 2 is a great portable speaker that fits your pocket and sounds surprisingly good for music. It’s also an excellent choice for listening to podcasts or watching TV shows on a mobile device. It’s also a great choice if you want a stereo pair of speakers for a small room since you can buy two for the same price as one of its more well-known competitors.
We liked the bass response, usually where small speakers fall short. Tribit is saying little about the exact specs of the driver in this model, but whatever it is, it puts out much bass for being so small. And the battery life is great. It’s gone from 8 hours on the original Micro to 12 hours, which is great for trips or a day at the beach.
If you want a speaker to throw in your bag or attach to your bike, you won’t find a better one for such a low price. It’s great.
JBL Flip 6
The JBL Flip 6 is a prime example of a Bluetooth speaker that sticks to the basics and gets them all right. This rugged, portable speaker is super simple to use, sounds good, and can be paired with 100 other JBL speakers to create a huge wall of sound.
You won’t find extra features such as voice assistants or Wi-Fi connectivity (or even a 3.5mm aux-in), but the Flip 6 sounds so good that you won’t miss them. During our testing, we found that its warm, well-balanced audio performance is far more powerful than you might expect from a speaker of this size, and while the treble can sound a little harsh at higher volumes, you’re getting plenty of clarity and detail.
A 12-hour battery life and water and dust resistance make this an ideal speaker to take to the pool or beach, and it’s available in an array of eye-catching colors. It’s a shame it doesn’t have a port to charge your phone, like some of the more prominent JBL speakers do, but that’s not a big deal
Like the JBL Flip 5 before it, the Flip 6 is an ideal speaker for anyone who wants to play their music, crank it up loud, sit back and enjoy – whether you’re listening at home or on the go.
Beosound A1
The Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 (2nd Gen) is almost identical to the original A1. It is an attractive and portable Bluetooth speaker that works with (admittedly broken) Alexa without needing Wi-Fi.
The puck-shaped or burger-shaped speaker looks sleek, but its IP67 water and dust resistance rating means it’s more durable than it looks. You can use it outside and even submerge it.
The A1 is great for small gatherings because it has clear sound and a 360-degree soundstage. Compared to many Bluetooth speakers, the perfect balance between bass, midrange, and treble makes us feel like we’re hearing our favorite songs for the first time. The music is exciting, punchy, and full of energy, but it doesn’t do this by putting too much bass or treble. Even though it’s what you’d expect from B&O and costs more, this is still the best small portable speaker for serious music fans.
With Bluetooth 5.1, the speaker is easy to connect to your phone, and with Alexa voice assistance built-in, it can also be used as an intelligent speaker. The A1 is the first speaker that works with Alexa without needing to be connected to your home Wi-Fi network. This is impressive in and of itself, but the voice assistant was sometimes slow to respond to our commands. This is because it routes over Bluetooth to your phone, and then your phone makes the request over whatever internet connection it has, which could be better.
Tribit Stormbox Blast
The Tribit Stormbox Blast is an unusual speaker, and there are a few things you should know about it before you buy it: it’s pretty heavy, and you can’t turn those lights off completely, but you can make them only come on when you change the volume levels.
In all honesty, it’s not the most understated device we’ve looked at. But the criticism stops there. The Stormbox Blast is the most prominent and influential Bluetooth speaker in Tribit’s growing line of portable speakers. It sounds just as clear, even at higher volumes, as models from better-known audio companies that cost three times as much.
Want to sound shy and quiet so you don’t bother your neighbors? If you want soft background playlists, you should look elsewhere. It’s important to note that two or three volume changes in our tests were enough to go from too quiet to too loud indoors.
But Tribit hasn’t been shy about the fact that it wants to bring the party to your ears and your body, and it has done so. This can get loud and still sound good. If you’re worried that one speaker won’t be enough for the garden party, this one will be, and for this price, it’s the best sound-per-pound deal you can find.
JBL Charge 5
Want a portable speaker that can play music and charge your phone at the same time? The JBL Charge 5 is worth a look. Compared to the JBL Pulse 4, which has a customizable light show, the JBL Charge 5 doesn’t have as many features. However, JBL has made small sound quality and volume improvements while keeping the all-day battery life.
Even though the sound is well-balanced, we found that above 60% volume, distortion starts to happen, making the highs sound harsh, and the bass stops getting louder after this point, making the sound bright.
Based on our experience, we recommend keeping the speaker volume between 50 and 60% for the best sound quality. If you have to turn it higher than this, there’s probably so much background noise that sound quality isn’t the most important thing.
The physical controls stay the same, with buttons on top of the speaker that are just a little higher. There are buttons for playback, volume, power, pairing with Bluetooth, and “Party Boost,” which raises the volume to 11.
On the back of the JBL Charge, 5 are a waterproof USB-C port for charging and a flap that covers the USB-A port that can be used to charge your phone. The Charge 5 doesn’t have the 3.5mm aux jack that the JBL Charge 4 did. This is a bummer for people who want to connect older devices.
Overall, the JBL Charge 5 portable speaker sounds bigger than it is. It has much bass for its small size and doesn’t skimp on the mids or highs.
UE Hyperboom
The Ultimate Ears Hyperboom is a powerful speaker that will make any room or outdoor space feel like a party. It’s the biggest Bluetooth speaker Ultimate Ears has made so far, but it still has the stylish designs the company is known for. It also has two Bluetooth radios so you can switch between two phones without a hitch.
Even though it is made for parties (which means it has many basses), it also has a well-balanced soundscape. Here, you never feel like you’re playing bass to make a party at the expense of other parts of the music, and almost any kind of music will make you feel good.
With the Ultimate Ears app, you can connect the Hyperboom to other UE speakers and use them together. You can also change the audio source and adjust the volume, and you can choose four different playlists in Amazon Music, Deezer, or Spotify that can be started by holding down the Play button for three seconds.
This Bluetooth speaker box is an excellent choice for small and big events.
Sonos Move
The Sonos Move is so good that you can use it as your party station on the go and your main wireless speaker at home.
The Sonos Move is more than just a Bluetooth speaker. It has two good drivers: a good app that lets you play music from hundreds of wireless sources, multi-room capabilities, and intelligent audio-tuning technology that changes the sound based on the speaker’s location. It’s a versatile speaker that stands up well next to the prominent, stationary Sonos speakers that made the company famous.
We tested the Sonos Move with various songs and musical styles in many places. What’s always clear is that the Sonos Move is one of the few Bluetooth speakers that can pull off tight, punchy bass, shimmering highs, and clear vocals that cut through everything else.
We also like that the Sonos app has EQ settings that let you turn the treble and bass up or down. If you want a balanced sound, turning up the bass on the EQ gives treble-heavy tracks more warmth than how they sound when they are recorded.
It could be better. Because it sounds so good, it’s heavy, and it costs a lot because it has many features. This speaker isn’t meant to be taken on a hike; it’s for the garden. It’s also not waterproof, but it can handle being splashed. But if you have the money, the Sonos Move is hard to beat if you want to get high-quality sound in or out of your home.
Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2
The original UE Wonderboom was at the top of our list of the best waterproof speakers for a long time, but the Wonderboom 2 took its place in 2019. There’s a new Wonderboom 3, but it’s not worth the upgrade (it’s made from more eco-friendly materials and comes in new colors), so we’re sticking with this beauty.
Even though the UE Wonderboom 2 looks almost exactly like the original, Ultimate Ears added a bunch of improvements that make it even better. For example, the Wonderboom 2 has a 30% longer battery life than the original, better bass response, and a nice Outdoor Boost feature that helps the speaker cut through background noise to sound even louder than before.
The UE Wonderboom 2 is a great rugged, waterproof speaker you’ll want to take everywhere. Even though it’s small, the speaker gets very loud and sounds great. It can also be paired with other Wonderboom speakers to make your music sound better. Even though it can’t match the bass response of bigger speakers like the UE Boom 3, the new bass gives the music warmth and intensity that it didn’t have before.
All in all, for $100, £90, or AU$129, the UE Wonderboom 2 is still one of the best waterproof speakers you can buy, and it’s the one we recommend if you want a small speaker to take to the beach or pool. It’s also made to survive a significant fall, making it hard to break.

The Anker Soundcore Flare 2 is a great Bluetooth speaker you can take anywhere and use for anything. It will appeal to anyone who wants to add color to their surroundings.
