Days after Google announced the biggest round of layoffs in the company’s 25-year history, executives defended the job cuts on Monday and answered questions from the affected workforce during a meeting with employees.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai pleaded with employees at the meeting to stay motivatedin one moment in which Google faces stiff competition in areas such as artificial intelligence, while also trying to explain why some employees were cut without warning.
This comes as Google decided on Friday to lay off 12,000 employees, or about 6% of its full-time workforce. As staff braced for possible layoffs, they wanted answers about the criteria used to decide who stays and who leaves. Especially since some of the dismissed employees have worked for long periods and have recently been promoted, as reported by “CNBC”, and which was reviewed by “Al Arabiya.net”.
Pichai said 2021 marked “one of the strongest years we’ve ever seen in company history, with revenues up 41 percent.” Google has expanded its headcount to keep pace with this expansion, assuming continued growth.
“In this context, we have made a number of decisions that could be corrected if growth trends continue,” he added.
Executives said 750 executives senior they were involved in the process, adding that it took a few weeks to decide who would be fired.
In terms of the criteria for the cuts, Google’s personnel director Fiona Ciccone said executives looked at areas in where work was needed but the company had too many people as well as places in where work was not essential. Ciccone added that the company has taken in consider skills, the number of years on the job for which experience or relationships are important, and productivity indicators such as sales quotas and historical employee performance.
Pichai indicated there would be pay cuts for executives but provided limited details. He said all vice presidents “will see a very significant reduction in theirs bonus annual” quest’year.
Before the job cuts, Google agreed to pay 80% of the bonus this month, with the rest planned for March or April. In previous years the whole bonus was disbursed in January.
When asked how to address working employees in company for more than 15 years, Vice President and Chief Talent and Learning Officer Brian Glaser said, “We all know that no one is immune from a position change.”
Pichai reminded employees that the company has important work to do, above all in terms of rapid advances in artificial intelligence. Last month, Google employees asked executives in a meeting if the AI chatbot, ChatGPT, was a “missed opportunity” for Google.
Pichai said on Monday that “it’s going to be a big year given the rapid developments in artificial intelligence,” which will have an impact in the whole company.
Pichai added, “There’s a paradigm shift in AI and I think with the focus on our talent and the work we’re going to do here, it’s going to be a great bet and I hope it is.”
