New Jersey and Ohio said Tuesday they would join other US states in banning the TikTok app for video clips on government-owned and operated devices.
Phil Murphy, Democratic governor of New Jersey, said that in addition to banning the application owned by Chinese technology company ByteDance, electronic applications, products, programs and services belonging to more than ten companies, including Huawei, Hikvision, Tencent Holdings and Tencent ZTE holding companies will also be banned
Corporation and Kaspersky Lab.
“There were national security concerns regarding user data that the Chinese government might ask ByteDance to provide,” Murphy’s office said.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, also said in the app ban order that these cybersecurity apps pose a national and local security threat to the users of these apps and platforms and to the devices that store the apps and platforms.
And “Tik Tok” expressed its regret for banning the application in a number of states and claimed that this was based on errors and unsubstantiated allegations.
For three years, TikTok has been trying to assure Washington that the personal data of American citizens is not accessible and its content cannot be manipulated by the Chinese Communist Party or any other entity under Beijing’s influence.
In recent weeks, 19 US states have locked down at least in access to the TikTok platform for devices used by those state governments begins.
And some members of Congress had proposed a blanket ban on the platform nationwide, which would prompt the United States to follow in the footsteps of countries – such as India – that have already banned the use of the platform.
US and other TikTok officials have been busy in months-long talks over a national security deal that would address US concerns over China’s access to the data of more than 100 million US subscribers on the popular video platform.
