Apple Failed to Introduce a Classical Music App in 2022

Apple announced the acquisition of the classical music provider Primephonic in August 2021. Apple had intended to introduce a specialized classical music app in 2022, but the year ended without the app being released.

“Apple Music aims to develop a dedicated classical music app next year, integrating Primephonic’s classical user experience that fans have grown to appreciate with additional added features,” according to a press release from the Apple Newsroom in 2021. Apple has not spoken publicly about the plans since, and it’s unknown whether the app will be available in 2023.

Primephonic will close in September 2021, with customers receiving six months of free Apple Music subscription. If it ever becomes available, the Apple Classical app will replace Primephonic, giving customers a location to listen to streaming classical music from Beethoven and Mozart.

Last year, hidden references to the Apple Classical app were spotted in an Android beta version of the Apple Music app and an iOS 15.5 beta. Last year, more references to the program were uncovered in an XML file on Apple’s servers.

Apple stated that it would include Primephonic’s greatest features, such as “improved browsing and search capabilities by composer and repertoire” and “rich displays of classical music metadata.” However, the business may require more time to work on this. Primephonic also compensated artists and other rights holders using a unique pay-per-second-listened mechanism rather than a pay-per-play one like Apple Music, implying that Apple is still attempting to find an appropriate reimbursement strategy for the Apple Classical app.

It is still being determined whether the Apple Classical app will be published in 2023 or the plans have been scrapped. We’ve reached out to Apple for comment on the matter and will update this article if we receive a response.
