Best laptop for University 2023

Our choices for the best laptops for students at all levels of education

The best laptop for students should give you much value for the money. Many college students live on a tighter budget, and a new laptop is usually the most expensive thing they buy when they start a new course. But that doesn’t mean you should choose the least expensive laptop you can find.

When picking the best laptop for a student, you must ensure you get the most for your money, or you’ll end up with a clunker. In the end, the best laptop for each person will be different. Suppose you’re majoring in filmmaking or animation. In that case, you’ll need a computer with powerful parts and a dedicated GPU to run software like video editing and rendering programs, which use many resources. The same is true for students in STEM.

But if you’re studying something like literature, you might be better off with a light machine, like one of the best 2-in-1 laptops, since you’ll only be doing simple things like browsing the web and typing documents. Hybrid laptops are great if you want to read a lot on your device because you can switch between laptop and tablet modes.

We know that it can take much work to decide what to go with when there are so many choices on the market. Don’t worry, though. We’ve put many laptops through their paces and listed our top picks for students below.

We know that everyone has different needs. As a result, we’ve chosen laptops that fit a wide range of conditions and budgets. For example, the best gaming laptops will cost much more than the best Chromebooks for students. But the processing power of the first one will also be much better than that of even the best Chromebook.

Read on to find out which laptops we think are the best for students. We also listed the best prices, so you can get a good deal no matter what you choose.

The Best Student Laptops 2023

MacBook Air (M2, 2022)

If you are familiar with macOS and want the best laptop for a student, you don’t need to look any further. In 2020, when Apple released its line of M1-powered products, it made a big splash. As the first laptop to have Apple’s own system on a chip (SoC), the company’s thinnest and lightest MacBook Air ever made quickly became one of the most exciting laptops from Apple in recent years.

The new M2 SoC runs this next-generation MacBook Air, making it better than ever and giving it great performance. The only real problem we had with it was that it was a bit expensive. If you want a MacBook but have a smaller budget, you might want to look into the 2020 M1 model.

Even though the fact that it doesn’t have a fan can cause thermal throttling compared to the Pro, we were able to run demanding tasks without any major throttling. The battery life is also a big plus for heavy users and lasts longer than most competitors. It won’t be the cheapest option for students, but this is by far the best laptop for those with a little more money to spend.

Acer Chromebook Spin 311

The Acer Chromebook Spin 311 is an excellent choice if you want something that can do many different things. This all-around laptop is perfect for students because it has a long battery life, is built well, and is easy to use. But the Acer Chromebook Spin 311 goes even further because it can do many different things. It has more ports than it needs, especially for its size. Its 2-in-1 design is excellent for people who want a laptop and a tablet but can only afford one. We liked its touchscreen display, but it’s hard to use outside because of how bright it can get.

It’s also very portable because it’s only 11 inches long. Even though the keyboard and trackpad are small, we found them responsive and pleasant to use. We wish it had more power, though, because when we ask it to do more intensive tasks, it can stutter a little. But the Spin 311 is perfect for students who need a small laptop that can do many different things and doesn’t cost too much.

MacBook Air (M1, 2020)

Even though the M2 model is now our favorite, the M1 MacBook Air is still a strong contender, and it’s also a better deal than the newer model. Switching from Intel processors to Apple’s silicon was a risky move that paid off. The new processors are faster and have better battery life.

The best Apple laptop for students improves on everything that makes the M1 model better than the Intel models. Even when we used it to edit 4K videos, it worked quickly. However, the beautiful screen is smaller at 13.3 inches and 100 nits darker than the screen on the newer M2 model, which is 13.6 inches and has been upgraded. It’s also a little heavier, but given how well it works, it’s still an impressively thin and light laptop.

As a fun bonus, this MacBook Air has more color choices than its younger sibling, the M2. If you want a MacBook but can’t afford the 2022 Air, this laptop will work well for you, even after college.

Dell XPS 13 (2022)

The Dell XPS 15 is further down this list. It has a bigger screen and a separate graphics card, making it an excellent choice for students who need more processing power to edit videos or do math. This model has graphics that are built in, which makes it better for everyday tasks like writing essays and answering emails.

But, oh, what a great little tool it is for doing those easier jobs! Dell’s XPS line of laptops has been one of our favorites for a long time, and this new model for 2022 is no different. It has a superfast 12th-generation Intel processor and very affordable prices on the lower-spec models. If you pay more for a more powerful model, you can get more storage space, faster performance, and a touch screen with a higher resolution.

The Dell XPS 13 is also very thin and light, which makes it great for students who are always on the go. If you’ve ever had to run across campus between classes, as this writer has, you’ll know how important it is to have a light but sturdy laptop that you can quickly throw into a bag and take with you on your next campus sprint.

Surface Laptop Go 2

A high-end laptop doesn’t have to have a high-end price tag, and the Surface Laptop Go 2 is affordable even when fully loaded. But it does a lot more than look good and be cheap. It’s a well-made machine with a mostly aluminum shell and a plastic bottom. It can take a lot of wear and tear. It has the best keyboard and trackpad, even though they don’t light up. For the price, there has to be a give-and-take somewhere.

Despite having a lower resolution, the screen is surprisingly good. Until we looked at its specs, we didn’t know it wasn’t full HD. Even though its screen size was only 12.4, the 3:2 aspect ratio gave us a little more vertical space to work with. It’s not going to win any awards for how well it works, but we were able to do many things at once while going about our daily work. The last thing that makes this a good companion for high school students who are always on the go is that the battery lasts all day. During our movie loop test, it worked for 8 hours and 25 minutes, which is good.

Acer Aspire 5 (2022)

What Acer calls the “Aspire 5” would likely be five or more different models for another company. So, it can take much work to figure out which is best for you. It comes with a wide range of processors from both AMD and Intel and comes in three different sizes.

Still, you can get CPUs with enough power and RAM to do some light gaming. Even with a basic 14-inch model, we got some excellent results when we tested performance. It also has a good battery life of six and a half hours, which should be enough to get you through most of the day if you’re not doing intensive tasks.

It’s lighter than other items on this list, but it’s not too heavy. The 14-inch model weighs less than four pounds. But the price makes this something to think about. No matter which model you look at, you get a lot for a full-featured laptop that isn’t a Chromebook.

Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 OLED Chromebook

The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 OLED Chromebook isn’t just one of the best laptops for students. This Chromebook is one of the best ones on the market. It works well, has a long battery life, and is very easy to carry around. It’s perfect for carrying around campus, taking to student council meetings, and relaxing in bed after schoolwork because it’s durable and easy to carry.

The battery life is so great that we could watch a movie loop for 16 hours and 20 minutes. Of course, we should also talk about that fancy new OLED screen. It might sound like a luxury feature for students, but this Chromebook is so cheap that we think you should treat yourself. We also found that the detachable keyboard, which is still flimsy because it can be taken off, is now bigger. Now, it’s a lot easier to use to type up those school reports. This notebook is great for high school and college students alike.

MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1, 2020)

Apple MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1)
MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1, 2020)

Don’t write off the graphics card built into the MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1, 2020). Even though it’s not a discrete GPU, it has much better graphics than budget and lower mid-range mobile GPUs and is much better than Intel’s UHD integrated graphics. The new MacBook Pro 13-inch has great performance and long battery life, thanks to Apple’s innovative M1 chip.

It works so well that it can handle 4K and even 8K videos without trouble, which is great news for film students. And it’s not just a little more powerful than the model it replaced; when we tested it, it blew its Intel-based predecessor out of the water with a 70% increase in multi-core tests. In our tests, the battery life was also five hours longer.

But performance is not all that matters. It’s also easy to use; the keyboard is great, which needs to be fixed in older MacBook Pro models. It is very portable, just like most of the smaller MacBook Pros. So, if you want a powerful laptop that is still small and light, this is the best one you can buy for a student.
