Meta Reveals Impressive Battery Runtime for Next-Gen VR Headset

One of the best things about the Quest 2 is that it has a good mix of reasonable compromises, like the XR2 chip system that is slightly underclocked. This lets the battery last for two to three hours, among other things. Meta just stated that the battery life of the upcoming Quest 3 should be about the same.

In an AMA Q&A on July 10, 2023, CTO Andrew Bosworth said that users could expect the headset to last about the same amount of time before it needs to be charged. When asked how long the Quest 3’s battery would last, Bosworth said, “About the same as Quest 2, give or take. And I think we can always keep working on it and improving it, though it depends on what you’re using it for.”

Quest 3 Battery life Confirmed

The next-generation Snapdragon chip, made in partnership with Qualcomm, will have a GPU that is more than twice as fast as the Snapdragon XR2 in the Quest 2. It will also have a new cooling system. So, even though the battery is working better, it may need a little more power.

Also, Bozworth comforted a questioner in the AMA who was worried that Meta’s premium VR headset Quest Pro wouldn’t get updates for a long time. “Yes, of course, we continue to make all of our headsets better over time.”

Meta is very happy with its speed updates to the Quest 2 and Quest Pro in June, and Bosworth said that the company will keep working on software improvements for its current VR headsets.

With Quest Update v55, Meta also puts out “Quest Super Resolution” for the platform. This gives developers choices for making graphics look sharper. Since late June, the fix has been released in waves, but it may not have reached everyone yet.
