The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold its first formal debate on artificial intelligence this week in New York, with Britain calling for an international dialogue on the impact of artificial intelligence on human life, pace, and security around the world.
Technological risk mitigation
The meeting comes as governments around the world consider how to mitigate the risks of emerging AI technology, which could reshape the global economy and change the international security landscape.
Britain assumes the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council this month, seeking a global leadership role in regulating the use of artificial intelligence.
British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will also chair the debate on Tuesday.

The UN Human Rights Council also adopted a resolution on Friday calling on the international community to adopt preventive and control measures in the subject of artificial intelligence, according to Agence France-Presse.
Resolution calls for improved transparency of AI systems and to ensure that data assigned to this technology is collected, used, shared, stored, and discarded in ways compatible with human rights, especially after Geoffrey Hinton, described as the ‘godfather of artificial intelligence’, urged governments in June to step in to ensure machines don’t take over society.
