The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max (which could still be called the iPhone 15 Ultra) are expected to replace the iPhone 14 and its siblings as Apple’s best iPhones in September.
We’ve already discussed what we think the iPhone 15 will have, how it will look, and how much it will cost elsewhere on TechRadar. But what about the cameras?
In this piece, we review all the rumors we’ve heard about the iPhone 15 camera. There are separate sections for the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
iPhone 15 CAMERA
The iPhone 15 is expected to have a dual-sensor camera setup, just like the iPhone 14. However, reports suggest that the iPhone 15 will get the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 48MP main sensor instead of the iPhone 14’s 12MP main sensor.
This is great news for people who like the basic iPhones from Apple. The cameras on the iPhone 14 are good enough for most photography jobs, but they aren’t much different from the ones on the iPhone 13 (except for a better imaging pipeline that powers them).
So, the iPhone 15 could give people who already have an iPhone a real, long-awaited reason to change, even though we don’t expect any improvements over the iPhone 14’s meager 5x digital zoom.
When it comes to taking selfies, the iPhone 15 is likely to have the same 12MP selfie camera as the iPhone 14.
iPhone 15 PRO CAMERA
The iPhone 15 Pro probably won’t change much from its predecessor’s (admittedly great) triple-sensor system, which has three lenses:
- 48MP wide (24mm f/2.8)
- 12MP ultrawide (13mm f/2.2)
- 12MP telephoto (77mm f/2.8) w/ 3x optical zoom
The only real upgrade reported for the iPhone 15 Pro is a periscope camera, but we think this tech, along with a telephoto camera with a variable zoom lens, will be saved for the photography-focused Ultra iPhone, whenever it comes out.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that the iPhone 16 Pro will have a bigger screen to fit an Ultra-style periscope lens. Because of this, we don’t expect to see one on this year’s Pro model.
The sensors’ quality is likely to be the biggest difference between the cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro. Leaks suggest that the iPhone 15 Pro will have new sensors made by Sony that can take in more light. Other than that, the biggest changes to the phone might be how it looks, which might not be a bad thing given how good the cameras are on the iPhone 14 Pro.
iPhone 15 PRO MAX CAMERA
The triple-sensor setup of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is said to be better in a few key ways than that of the iPhone 15 Pro. But because it’s unclear if Apple will release an iPhone 15 Ultra this year, we don’t know for sure what those changes will be.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max has the same three lenses on the back as the iPhone 14 Pro:
- 48MP wide (24mm f/2.8)
- 12MP ultrawide (13mm f/2.2)
- 12MP telephoto (77mm f/2.8) w/ 3x optical zoom
As was said about the iPhone 15 Pro, there were rumors that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max would have periscope cameras. However, expert Ming-Chi Kuo now thinks that the iPhone 16 Pro will be the first to get a periscope lens because it might have a bigger screen.
There’s still a chance that the iPhone 15 Pro Max, bigger than the iPhone 15 Pro, could get a periscope camera in 2023, but all the reports point to this lens being a standout feature of Apple’s first Ultra iPhone.
Similarly, there were reports that the iPhone 15 Ultra would have a telephoto camera with a variable zoom lens, like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. However, these rumors have since died down. Variable optical zoom cameras are very rare in smartphones today. The Sony Xperia 1 IV has one, but it can only zoom between 3.5x and 5.2x, so this function could again be saved for Apple’s first Ultra iPhone whenever it comes out.
The sensors will likely be the biggest difference between the cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the ones on the iPhone XS Max. One of these sensors, the Sony IMX903, is said to be 1.14 inches long, which means the iPhone 15 Pro Max could have the biggest camera sensor ever used.
Early rumors also said that the iPhone 15 Ultra will be able to process images better than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, given how the Ultra’s development is going, we’re more likely to think that these better processing skills will be added to the iPhone 15 Pro Max instead.
And finally, the iPhone 15 Pro Max might have a front-facing camera with two lenses, which would be better than the 12MP TrueDepth camera on the iPhone 15 Pro.
