NATO Summit: French President Macron to Provide Ukraine with Long-Range Missiles
Before the NATO summit in Vilnius. French President Emmanuel Macron said he had decided to provide Kyiv with new long-range missiles that would allow Ukrainian forces to deliver “deep strikes” (Rus.).
Background
The media reported that this was an air-to-surface SCALP cruise missile developed by the French company Matra and British Aerospace.
Production and Specifications
The production of this rocket is currently carried out by the European company MBDA. It is worth two million pounds.
The American newspaper The Drive reported that the range of export models of missiles is 250 km. However, there are developed models that can be launched at a distance of up to 560 km.
Design and Features
The design of the French missile began in 1994 based on the French Apache missile. SCALP differs from its British counterpart Storm Shadow in that it carries small-sized ammunition in a single charge, rather than a single warhead, as in the case of Storm Shadow, there is an exported Black Shaheen model, which can be carried on light fighters.
Additional Features:
Rocket weight 1300 kg, length 5.1 meters, diameter 0.5 meters, wingspan 2.84 meters, warhead weight 450 kg, flight range over 250 km, flight altitude 30-40 meters, flight speed Mach 0.8, which is equivalent to about 1000 km/h.
