Scientists Discover New Species of Venomous Snake in Australia
Scientists in Australia have discovered a new species of venomous snake that was previously thought to be a known species.
Genetic Studies Revealed New Species
The Daily Mail reports that genetic studies conducted by scientists at the University of Adelaide, led by geneticists James Nankyol, Mark Hutchinson, and others, have shown that the venomous snake Demansia Cyanochasma is a new, separate species, and not a related species, as previously thought.
Easily Confused with Similar Species
Demansia Cyanochasma is often confused with other species due to similar physical characteristics, Hutchinson says. But by taking and comparing tissue samples of climbing vipers, we found that this is an independent species.
Not Dangerous to Humans
The Demansia Cyanochasma snake is a venomous snake, but it is not considered dangerous to human life as its bite causes nothing but some pain and swelling. These snakes feed mainly on lizards.
Description of the Snake
It is about 70 cm long and very thin, which means that its head is very small and its fangs are very short.
