With iOS 16, Apple gave the Lock Screen a new look with widgets and the option to change it. In iOS 17, the Lock Screen is getting even better. Widgets are more useful, and a new mode turns your iPhone into an information hub when you’re not using it.
This guide shows you everything new on iOS 17’s Lock Screen.
StandBy
StandBy is a Lock Screen mode that turns on when an iPhone is put into a charger and turned horizontally (also called “landscape”). It works with a MagSafe charger, which is probably the best way to use it, but it also works with a Lightning or Qi-based wireless charger.
It’s like Nightstand mode if you have an Apple Watch, but it can do more than Nightstand mode. You can choose from different StandBy screens, some of which can be changed and some require you to open the iPhone.
Notifications
Incoming messages will be shown in full screen when your iPhone is in StandBy mode. So, if you get an iMessage, the person’s name and the Messages icon will pop up to let you know you have a message.
Content that would not usually be shown in a notification will not show up in StandBy mode unless you are close and have unlocked your device with Touch ID or Face ID.
Customizing StandBy
You can change what you see on any of the StandBy screens by holding down for a long time on that screen. If you press and hold one of the widgets on the widget screen, you can choose which widgets to see.
Almost all of the StandBy display choices can be changed to suit your needs. You can do this by swiping through the options and long pressing on the ones you want to change.
Always-On StandBy
With the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (and future iPhones), the always-on display makes StandBy more useful. StandBy material is always on and working on these devices, so you don’t have to do anything with your iPhone.
On iPhones that don’t have “always-on” display technology, you have to tap the screen to turn it on because it goes off after a short time. StandBy works with all iPhones but best with the always-on display.
Interactive Widgets
Widgets for the Lock Screen were added in iOS 16, but in iOS 17 they are now dynamic, which makes them much more useful. On iOS 16, tapping a Lock Screen widget opens the app that goes with it. However, this step isn’t needed for some widgets that can do their jobs without an app.
You can complete a job right in the Reminders widget or control a smart home device without opening the Home app by using the Home widget. Apple apps have features that let you connect with them, and third-party developers have an API that lets them do the same.
Interactive apps can be used on both the Lock Screen and the Home Screen, so they can do more no matter where they are.
