Leading AI Developers Agree to AI Protections
Introduction
Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and other leading AI technology developers have agreed to meet a series of AI protections brokered by US President Joe Biden’s administration.
Voluntary Commitments
In addition, the White House announced on Friday that it had obtained voluntary commitments from seven American companies aimed at ensuring the safety of their artificial intelligence products before they are launched.
He added in a statement that the four tech giants, along with the developer of ChatGBT OpenAI and the start-up Anthropic and Inflection AI, are committed in test security “ducts in from independent experts” to protect against key risks such as biosecurity and cybersecurity.
Weaknesses
The companies have also committed to ways to report vulnerabilities in their systems and use digital watermarks to help distinguish between real and AI-generated images.
Immediate Measures
The White House has said companies will publicly report flaws and risks in their technologies, including impacts on fairness and bias.
Voluntary commitments are intended as an immediate way to deal with risks in view of a long-term effort to get Congress to pass laws regulating the technology.
Conversely, some proponents of AI regulations have said Biden’s move is just the beginning, but that more needs to be done to hold companies and their products accountable.
Potential Legislation
For his part, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, has said he will introduce legislation to regulate artificial intelligence. He has held a series of briefings with government officials to educate senators on an issue that has attracted bipartisan interest.
A number of tech executives have called for regulation of AI, and many of them traveled to the White House in May to speak with Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and other officials.
