Bluesky Surpasses One Million Downloads, Despite Being Invite-Only
As Instagram’s new Twitter rival Threads soars into the double-digit millions after launching on Wednesday, another Twitter alternative, Bluesky, has hit a milestone of its own. According to a new analysis from app store intelligence provider data.ai, Bluesky has now topped a million downloads across iOS and Android, despite remaining an invite-only app.
Bluesky’s milestone of surpassing one million downloads may not compare to the exponential growth of Threads, which is integrated with Instagram’s social graph, or even Twitter itself, which added 72 million first-time installs during the same period. Nevertheless, Bluesky’s growth is notable with its average of 8,300 first-time installs per day, considering the scarcity of invites and potential usability issues that caused sign-up pauses.
Data.ai suggests that Twitter’s decision to limit the number of readable tweets encouraged new demand for alternative platforms and aided Bluesky in achieving its milestone. Since June 30th, an estimated 300,000 new Bluesky installs were registered.
Currently, the United States accounts for the largest number of Bluesky installs at 40%, followed by Brazil (9.5%), Japan (8.5%), Thailand (7.5%), and the United Kingdom (4.6%).
While it took Bluesky approximately four months to reach the “1 million+” downloads milestone, the app could have experienced faster adoption if it had been fully opened to the public. The decision to keep the app private may hinder its potential success, especially with the release of Threads, which promises integration with ActivityPub, the protocol behind Mastodon, another popular Twitter alternative. In contrast, Bluesky is developing its own decentralized social networking protocol called the AT Protocol.
Despite facing moderation challenges, Bluesky is still in the race. The company recently announced $8 million in seed funding and its first paid service, custom domains, indicating a shift toward alternative monetization methods beyond the conventional ad-supported market.
