Meta Unveils Enhanced Anti-Piracy Measures for Meta Quest 2

Meta adds a new API that checks hardware and applications, among other things, to stop theft.

Developers who want to protect their VR apps “from unauthorized changes and possible security breaches” can use the Platform Integrity Attestation API.

On the Oculus Developer Blog, Meta offers the following ways to use Oculus:

• Securing device authentication
• Hardware-based app bans
• Protecting financial and enterprise app data
• External data misuse
• Anti-piracy

Meta says that the API makes an encrypted token and checks its authenticity with an attestation service. If the test fails, the app server for the VR app can decide not to start the app.

New Measure seems to be optional

At this point, no one knows how the API will affect software piracy and generally accepted software modding. Could the new rule mean that custom songs for the local Beat Saber won’t be possible anymore? We’ll have to see what happens.

Here’s what well-known Quest tinkerer and software detective Basti564 has to say about the new API:

“In my view, this API is mostly used with anti-cheat systems or to stop online games from being hacked. So not, as many people think, against Beat Saber mods that add new songs, but against games like VRChat and Gorilla Tag, which don’t like mods and want to stop cheats. But Beat Games could, for example, only let people play the original game online if they want to see the leaderboards. The technology could also be used to stop online games from being stolen. But most online games on The Quest already check the license on the server side to stop cheating.

Meta’s main goal is probably to protect its own VR environment. Virtual reality is still a niche, and it’s hard for many makers to profit from VR apps. Giving them tools to stop piracy makes developers more interested in Meta’s environment.

The API doesn’t seem to be a measure for the whole system. Instead, coders can decide for themselves if they want to use the Attestation API or not. The API needs to be connected to an authentication and app server for the checks to work.

The Quest 2, the Quest Pro, and the Meta Quest 3, which will come out in the fall, are all supported products.
