Fake Telegram App Containing Malware Spreading on Android

A Serious Threat to User Safety

A fake version of Telegram instant messaging app has spread to the Android system and this version contains malware that threatens users’ safety, according to a report released by cybersecurity researchers at Check Point.

Malicious Activities of the Bogus Application

When the bogus application gets installed on the victim’s device, it starts executing malicious code in background, disguised as a service of download updates, and first starts collecting data about the victim’s device, then establishes a connection with its dedicated server, to download more files, including a Trojan virus called Triada.

The Dangerous Triada Virus

The Triada virus can acquire powers in the device and inject itself in other system processes, it also has the ability to steal victims money by engaging them in paid services, make digital purchases using phone number and SMS, as well as seize passwords and sensitive data in the device Displaying annoying ads.

Prating Android Devices

Triada virus is one of the most dangerous viruses that infect Android devices due to its ability to prate in deep into the operating system and manipulate system processes and applications, and usually spreads through infected applications downloaded from unreliable sources.

Similar Instances in the Past

Interestingly Kaspersky, a specialized company in computer security, it had also detected the built-in Triada virus in a modified version of the WhatsApp application in earlier, at the end of last year, and had warned the Indian police days before the spread of another fake version of the application called “WhatsApp Rosa”.

Precautions for Users

The Telegram application concerned is not found in the Google Play Store, but rather on unofficial external sites, so it is always recommended to avoid downloading applications or updates from external official sources.

These applications are usually promoted as having additional features not found in the original official version, which is probably not true, and expose your device to many security risks.
